Chapter 1: Installation and System Requirements
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Note tht this game is rated M for 'Marvelous'.

Requires: A TI-83+/84+/SE; 23KB RAM minimum, 24KB preferred; At least 45 KB Archive (TI-Connect) or 140 KB (Tilp or TiGraphLink). Uses Pics 1-9 and 0; Lists 1-4, B3C1, B3C2, B3SV, E, and DIF. Uses matrix [A],all the strings, and all the letter variables. You also need to have MirageOS installed with the 'enable lowercase' option ON.

Mirage OS is included in the folder 'MirageOS'. Send the App (if you do not already have it), then run it on the calc. Press [Alpha] to enter the options mode. Press the down arrow to get to 'Miscellaneous Options' and press [Enter]. Go to 'Enable Lowercase' and press [2nd] so that an 'x' appears in the check box. Now press [Alpha] again to exit the options, and [Mode] to exit Mirage.

Send the Xlib app from the 'xlib0.602' folder. On your calc, press[APPS], select Xlib with the arrow keys, press [ENTER], [1], [3].

Send programs theta, Q, X, Z, and ZDEL from the 'Flash Gordon' folder. These should remain in the RAM.

Note that me2labs does not take any credit whatsoever for the programming of MirageOS, Xlib, or Flash Gordon. See the readmes for these programs to find the author.

Send BQ3FPICS (from the 'Pictures' folder) to your calc, ungroup it, and archive all of the pictures.

If you use Tilp or TiGraphLink:
-Send all the group files to your calc. Now, ungroup BQ3CHP1A, and archive everything except prgmBATQ3.
-Ungroup BQ3CHP1B. Archive matrix [A], lists B3C1, B3C2, B3SV, and DIF, and Str2.
-To play the next chapter, delete program Difcult and all the PROGRAMS that start with "BQ3". Unarchive matrix A, then ungroup BQ3CHP2A and BQ3CHP2B. If the calc asks you to overwrite something, do it!
-Archive all of the programs that begin with "BQ3" and matrix [A].
-Rinse and repeat for chapters 3 and 4, except you won't have to delete program Difcult.

If you use Ti-Connect:
1-Plug in the Calc
2-Turn on TI-Connect.
3-Select 'Ti Device Explorer'
4-Drag 'n' drop all the contents of the chapter 1 archive folder onto the "Flash/Archive" tab in the explorer.
5-Drag 'n' drop all the contents of Chapter 1 RAM onto the picture of the calc in the TI device explorer window to put it in the RAM.
6-When you'r ready to play the next chapter, unarchive matrix [A], delete program Difcult and all of the PROGRAMS that start with "BQ3". Do NOT delete any lists, strings, pictures, or prgmBATQ3.
7-Repeat steps 1 through 4 for the Chapter 2 folder.
8-Repeat steps 1 through 4 and 6 for the remaining chapters, but you won't have to delete program Difcult.

NOTE: It is a good idea to Garbage Collect between chapters. Press [2nd] [0] [TAN] [Enter] and select 'Yes'.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter 2: Starting a New Game/Terminology Guide
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run prgmBATQ3 (preferably from the home screen, but you can run it in MirageOS or CrunchyOS. The performance will be much lower if you do so.).

"New" starts a new game:
When you start a new game, you will be presented with three menus that ask you for a level of difficulty. The first sets the enemies' strength, the second their armor, and the third their speed (chance of getting a miss or critical hit). The top choice is the easiest, the bottom one is the hardest. I recommend playing the game at the easiest difficulty levels at first.

Now you will be treated to a cutscene. Press [Enter] to proceed through cutscenes.

The game will then begin in the area you first noticed when you ran prgmBATQ3.

Note that the 'New' option is not available in chapters 2-4.

Some initial terminology might be helpful to understanding parts of the game and game guide.

---Terminology---

-EMG (skills)
This acronym stands for "Electronically Manipulated Gluon anomalies". Gluons are subatomic particles that hold atoms together, so manipulation of these particles results in various phenomena. These phenomena were harnessed to allow more powerful fighting abilities. You might think of it as similar to the Force on Star Wars, but not quite the same thing, and not obtained from the same source. EMG is much stronger, and a decent Emger could OHKO Darth Vader with Bio.

-Tonfa/Blade Tonfa
A tonfa is a blade worn on the hands and wrists that goes up the wielder's arm (usually to the elbow or shoulder). It is used to slash horizontally and diagonally, and can also be used to block attacks.

-Emger/Emgress
A person, male or female, respectively, who is very well-versed in EMG usage.

-Knucks
You should know what these are. Like brass knucles.

-Claws
A weapon worn on the hand and used for slashing and punching. These are a form of knucks.

-SP
Skill points, used for EMG. You can't use EMG if you run out.

-HP
Hit Points or Health Points. If you run out, you die.

-Anakim
A race of half-human, half-demon creatures. Supposed to have been obliterated by 800 B.C.

-XP/EXP/Exp/Experience
The amount of learning you have achieved in the ways of combat since your last level up.

-Level
The current fighting ability of your character.

------------------------------------------------
Chapter 3: Continuing and loading
------------------------------------------------

Now select 'Continue' on the menu. Save when you reach the main menu (discussed shortly).

Continue works like a quicksave recall. If you quit the game without saving and select 'Continue', you will resume in the nearest town with all your stuff. IF you die, however, select 'Load'.

'Load' loads your saved game. However, you will primarily be using the 'Continue' command, as it is quicker and you can continue instead of loading.

-------------------------------------
Chapter 4: The Main Menu
-------------------------------------

This area is also known as the 'Town Square'.

From here, you have several options. First thing to do when you first play the game is to SAVE. After that, try the university (it is destroyed in Chapter 1, you must wait until Chapter 2 to learn anything there).

'Look around' and you can find a lot of stuff, including free items, money, a lottery, a woman who increases the hero's stats for a price, people with information to give for free, and a riddler. The answers to his questions are always one word long and case-sensitive. (In an older version there was a glitch that would change the weapon name and give you some really weird stuff, but that has been removed. No one wants an Egg for a weapon;)

'Leave Town' is discussed later in the chapter of that title.

Saving is essential.

Quitting is necessary when you need to do something else. Just select 'Continue' to pick up where you left off.

You can heal up at the Inn. The price charged varies depending on your current state of health and the town you are in.

If at any time during the game you are asked a yes/no question, type [1] and press [Enter] for yes, type any other number and press [Enter] for no.

Our next topic is the Market, where you can shop for and sell goods.

--------------------------------
Chapter 5: The Market
--------------------------------

You will find that the market is a valuable place. Here you can check your stats, buy items and equipment, and sell said items.

You check your stats in the market. Here you can see the characters' strength, stamina, health (shown as Current HP/Max HP), skill points (Current SP/Max SP), skills known, attack and defence factors, precision (accuracy), name, experience, and level. You are also shown your difficulty level (9-99 although a weird bug in chapter 1 shows it as 300-1100. Can't figure that one out.), money, equipment, and items.

Note that a person can have the same armor, shield, and stamina as another person and still have a different defense factor (or have the same weapon and strength and have a different attack factor). This is because each person has certain 'invisible numbers' that affects his/her combat factors. These are known as the attack multiplier and the defense multiplier. They are constant and have an effect on each character's attack and defense capabilities. A person who does well at attack but not as well at defence will have a higher attack multiplier and a lower defence one. The hero, for example, has an attack multiplier of 11 and a defense multiplier of 8 (these increase in the fourth chapter), making him a fairly well-balanced character. Defensive multipliers are typically lower because there is more defensive equipment available. Cresceban is the exception to this rule.

The equipment shops (armor, shield, and weapon) are all set up in the same way. You cannot buy what you cannot afford. You will see the items listed in a menu, the last option is 'Back' or 'Nevermind', and the cost is listed next to the object in question.
Press [up arrow] and [down arrow] to scroll through the menu, and press [Enter] or the number shown next to the object to purchase it. After buying a piece of equipment, a screen appears showing the hero and any other party members (1 other person maximum). Press [2nd] to equip the object to the hero and [Mode] to equip it to the other party member. In the first chapter, you can only equip stuff to the hero.

Note that this is the only area where you can equip stuff, once equipped an object can never be switched to a different user. If you reach another area where you obtain equipment, it is automatically equipped to the character who can best use it.

You can buy items in the same way as equipment, but you do not have to equip items. They go to your inventory.

You sell stuff using the sell option. Simply indicate the item or piece of equipment you wish to sell and it will be sold.

------------------------------------
Chapter 6: The University
------------------------------------

In the University you can buy new skills for your characters (maximum of ten skills). Your characters have set skills and can never buy a different one. In addition, you must buy all the skills in order, there is no other way.

You can only buy skills at the University in chapters 2,3, and 4. To buy a skill, enter the university. Select the person you will buy a skill for. The price appears. If you can afford the skill you buy it, if not, the game tells you so. You automatically buy the next highest numbered skill for your character.

Higher-level skills also typically use more SP. The amount of SP used varies depending on equipment, level, and a small random variation of 1 or 2 SP.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter 7: Leaving Town: The Adventure Begins
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, you've bought some stuff, checked on your character, looked around, saved, and now you're ready to go fight. Select the 'Leave Town' option at the Town Square and you will do so.

Now, you will see a birds'-eye view of the world, with your character roughly in the middle of the screen (he looks like an armored guy with a sword and shield). Press the arrow keys to move around. Press [DEL] to safely quick exit (you can use the [ON] key in any other area, but I do not recommend it here). Press [2nd] to see a screen with all of your characters' names, HP/max HP, and SP/max SP.

Now, note that there are several types of terrain. The tiles that look like three little houses are towns. Those that look like a large house are 'Special Areas' where you generally fight one or more bosses. The grassland tiles hold weak enemies, the forest (tree) tiles hold stronger enemies, and the highland tiles (small mountains) hold the strongest enemies (except for bosses). The mountain tiles (high mountains) cannot be entered. However, they do hold the same enemies as the highlands do, just in case you bump into one and have a random encounter at the same time.

There is a random chance of an encouter with an enemy every time you move around (at least 10% per tile). If you bump into a mountain then you will encounter a highlands enemy (in an unpublished version there was an enemy there with ALL his stats at zero. That was because I forgot to program enemies there). You cannot enter a mountain, but you can bump into it. You will spend most of your time wandering around and fighting enemies in random encounters.

Note that at times you may get an ERR: MEMORY on the world map or fight screen. Simply restart the game and select "Continue" to resume in town with all your items, Gold, and EXP.

If you have a random encounter, you enter a fight screen...

----------------------------------------
Chapter 8: Guide to Fighting
----------------------------------------

You have just had your first random encounter. You enter the Battle Screen. Your pulse begins to beat faster. Your mouth becomes a little dry. It's the main theme of BattleQuest. It's the game's namesake. It's a battle.

Welcome to the Battle Screen. You will see either two (Chapter 1) or three (Chapters 2-4) characters. The one on the left is your enemy. The next one is the hero. If there is a second person in your party, they appear at the far right. Beneath each friendly character you will see the amount of HP and SP they have. The enemy name is shown below the enemy. Any info messages will appear at the top left corner of the screen. damage and healing numbers will appear above the heads of the characters and enemy.

The order of battle is as follows: Your hero always goes first, followed by his teammate, with the enemy going last. The info bar will inform you when it is one of your characters' turn. The battle proceeds until either the enemy or the hero is dead. If the enemy dies, you will see a screen where you gain Experience and Gold. After that, if you have enough experience, you will gain a level. When you level up, your max HP and max SP increase by a certain amount relative to their previous value. In addition, when your characters reach certain levels, their strength and/or stamina increase. Note that the game does not inform you of stat increases, only of level gains.

If the non-hero friendly character is KO'd, nothing happens except that they can no longer act in the battle (their turn is skipped), and their HP is set to '1' after the end of the battle.

If the hero dies, it's instant game over. Restart the game and load from your last savegame.

Now, the battle commands. Battlequest 3 uses a 'hotkey' system to attack and use items.
The commands are as follows:

[2nd] Attacks with your weapon. This is the most commonly used command.
[Mode] Runs away. Cannot escape from bosses, Ents, or Mechanized units.
[Division Symbol] Uses a Medikit on the current character (restores HP).
[Multiplication Symbol] Uses a Surgikit on the current character (restore more HP).
[-] Uses a Cell on the current character (restores SP).
[+] Uses a Megavoltaire on the current character (restores more SP).
[1] Uses skill 1. When a skill is used it is shown in the info area of the battle screen.
[2] Uses skill 2.
[3] Uses skill 3.
[4]-[9] Uses skill 4-9 if available.
[0] Uses skill 10 if available.

If you press another button it has no effect.

When you attack, the attack can either miss (affected by precision), hit, or get a critical hit. Critical hits are completely random and do quite a bit of extra damage. Be aware: The enemy can get misses and critical hits too. Most enemies do not have skills.

The skills can be: offensive, status-inficting, stealing, or healing. The names explain the purpose. For more info on skills, look at Chapter 14 of this guide.

---------------------------------
Chapter 9: Game Guide
---------------------------------

This section of the readme contains a few hints and tips about the game.

-Train as much as you like. It's the main part of the game.
-You need to be at least Level 35 (I recommend 45) before taking on the final boss
-Thunder is strong against dragons and Mechanized foes.
-Use the lottery a lot-just don't bet all your money at once
-Stats from the woman selling them only boost the hero's abilities.
-Surgikits are better than Cure Skills, but the skills heal both people on your team
-The last boss has an insane attack
-Boss tips are found in the enemy section under the particular boss.
-Do not lose to a riddler-he damages you for 50% of your current HP.
-Some things that the villagers say are not entirely true.
-USE KNUCKS for as long as they are available. That means Kaiser knuckles and Venom claws.
-If you see a house to the east of a village, enter it. You can gain the Supreme equipment at these places
-If you lose a battle in one of these houses, you can still get equipment, but your cash bonus is reduced. Lose enough of these battles and you will have to pay a fee!
-Try to level up a lot and have a lot of money before you go to chapter 3. You'll see why.

----------------------------------------
Chapter 10: Character Guide
----------------------------------------

-Name: Hero (your choice)
-Class: Dragoon
-Bio: The hero is the son of the hero from the first two Battlequest games. His parents were killed and he seeks to revive them by traveling to the past and killing their murderer, Golbez. He lives in the land of Taradine.
-Strengths and Weaknesses: The hero is not that great at skill usage. His skill is useful, but his power with it goes down as the game goes on. This is because he is a good, well-balanced physical fighter whose stat gain rates for Strength and Defense gradually increase.
-Hometown: Langley

-Name: Diego Montoya
-Class: Thief
-Bio: Diego was engaged to be married in a distant village. His fiancee was killed, however, and he was filled with a desire for revenge. As his path is concurrent with the Hero's, he joins in Chapter 2.
-Strengths and Weaknesses: Diego is an expert thief. His skills allow you to take money and items from an enemy. He is also a very strong attacker. However, he is poor at defense, so armor and shields should be your first purchases for him.
-Hometown: Calda

-Name: Cresceban
-Class: Ninja
-Bio: Cresceban used to be Golbez' right-hand man, but left after Golbez murdered many innocents in a neutral country. He first meets the hero in chapter 1, but does not help out until Chapter 3.
-Strengths and Weaknesses: Cresceban is the first good EMG skill user you get. He is also the king of defense. However, his attack power suffers. You should give him a good weapon fairly quickly.
-Hometown: Takani

-Name:Syrene
-Class: Emgress
-Bio: A girl with a tragic background. Her family was killed in an accident when she was not around. She lived with a neglectful aunt until she saw the hero. She joins you in Chapter 4 and sticks with you through the end.
-Strengths and Weaknesses: Syrene is very weak at physical combat (until she gets the Ultima Weapon), suffering from a low attack and defense. However, she is the best skill user in the entire world.
-Hometown: Worcester

-Name: Dr. Korayashiko Mudo
-Bio: Dr. Mudo was born in Tokyo, Japan, and emigrated to Taradine so he could go to a better school. He became a famous inventor and scientist. He invented a Space-Time Warp device that the hero uses to travel to the past.
Hometown: Tokyo, Langley

-Name: Gogo
-Bio: Gogo is a renowned mime.
-Hometown: Calcutta

-Name: Gilgamesh
-Bio: Gilgamesh prides himself on being the greatest warrior ever.
-Hometown: Baghdad

-Name: Golbez
-Bio: No one knows Golbez' background, but his intentions are no secret. He wishes to conquer the world. He used huge EMG bombs to destroy large areas, then overran them with his troops.
-Hometown: ?

-Name: Exdeath
-Bio:?

Nova Cannon 5 or 6 and all of Diego's skills are recommended.

Chapter 3 Enemies

---BOSS---
Gogo
Class: Mime
HP: Variable
Strength: Variable
Defense: Variable

Gogo's stats are calculated as a function of yours. The higher your stats, the higher his stats are too.
This also includes Gold and Experience, so take advantage of this fact. Gogo isn't really that hard to beat. Just be sure to use Cresceban's Cure skills.

-Plains Area-
Red Belt
White Wolf
Knight

-Forest-
Fiery Dragon
Ent
M5A6

-Highlands/Mountains-
Sdkfz 238/7
Blue Belt
Dwarf Chief

-Challenge Area-
PzKw Mk I
PzKw Mk II (Lynx)
PzKw Mk III
PzKw Mk IV
PzKw Mk V (Panther)
PzKw Mk VI (Tiger)
PzKw Mk VII (King Tiger)

PzKw is the abbreviated for of Panzerkampfwagen, the German word for 'tank'. Directly translated into English it's "Tank-Like Battle Vehicle". Quite imposing, no?

---BOSS---
Gilgamesh
Class: Gladiator
HP: 8000
Strength: 350
Defense: 310

Look at Odin. Now look at Gilgamesh. Do you really need any help? C'mon, with all that upgraded armor and weaponry, this guy should be a breeze.

Chapter 4 Enemies

-Plains Area-
Brown Belt
Dark Wolf
-Myrmidon
The Myrmidon has a unique skill that greatly increases his Critical Hit rate. His Critical Hits are also more powerful than those of most enemies. Be careful with these guys.

-Forest-
Dark Dragon
Dark Knight
Omega (mechanized)

-Highlands/Mountains-
Omega Mk II (mechanized)
Black Belt
Templar

-Challenge Area-
Wyvern I
Wyvern II
Ice Dragon
Shade Dragon
Flame Wyrm
Chief Wyrm
Lord Dragon

Be sure to beat these. You seriously need the equipment here! Note that all Dragons are weak against Thunder.

---BOSS---
Golbez
Class: Warlord
HP: 48000
Strength: 600
Defense: 450

Special: Graviton Barrier (reduces EMG Skill damage by 85%)

Rely primarily on physical attacks against him. You have another battle coming up and you need all your SP for it. In addition, his barrier prevents him from taking much skill damage. Just use Curaja whenever you need it, hit him physically, and he'll go down.

---BOSS---
Exdeath
Class: Anakim
HP: ?
Strength: ?
Defense: ?

Special: Graviton Barrier
                Dark Cannon

Watch out, and pray that he doesn't hit the hero. He almost never uses Dark Cannon, but don't let that fool you. His normal hits can do over 8000 damage at times. For some reason, he always deals more damage to the hero than he does to Syrene. I recommend having the hero use Nova Cannon 10 or a Megavoltaire every round. Syrene should use Slow five or six times, then use Haste on most rounds with an occasional Ultima. Use a Megavoltaire on her only if you absolutely must. Keep it up, and you'll beat him.

Chapter 17: The Time to Come
----------------------------------

A few ideas on future me2labs productions (in order of priority).

Super Robot Taisen: Calculator Generation
-A tactical game consisting of animated battles between awesome robots. This will have set enemies on each map and at least 25 maps (minimum of 1 battle per map). Help on AI programming and map scrolling would be welcome!
-5% finished

Redemption
-A card game for the calculator, based on the Redemption card game from Cactus Games. You duel with heroes and villains in an effort to rescue lost souls from your opponent. This is a fun game to play with 2-4 people. I may make it a linkplay game.
-Not Started

Battlequest 4: Warp 9 (last part of name may change)
-An RPG set in the future. You will have particle beams and energy cannons instead of swords and tonfas. Will continue the storyline from Battlequest 3 (this game).
-Not Started

Neopets
-A game loosely based on the Neopet game online. Not much chance of this game ever being completed though. My assistant programmer who actually plays the game has not contacted me in some time, and the project has not been worked on for two or three years. This game is a lot likelier to be finished if I get feedback on Neopets and their stats, as well as some sprites suitable for calculator use. (If I can get enough of this response, the priority will increase to around 2nd place).
-15% finished (will require a lot of reworking for graphics).
